Superbly hand-crafted, silk Kimono and Haori form part of Japan's traditional wear for both women and men.
We've collected these stunning, pre-loved pieces during our travels through Japan, mainly in Kyoto - long famous for it's silk textile industry. However, we also have a trusted expert on the ground who keeps a discerning eye out for unique, well presented garments on our behalf.
All our Kimono and Haori are hand-sewn, vintage or antique and 100% silk. On rare occasion it is possible that a more recently updated 'lining' may be made of a different fabric for ease of care. We'll naturally let you know in the product description if that is the case.
The Japanese are a highly respectful nation so although some of our Kimono are very old, they have been so lovingly maintained they look and feel new. It is however important to note that due to age there can sometimes be imperfections and discolouration in places - predominantly on the inner lining which is not visible when worn. We endeavour to point out all such examples wherever possible.
Kimonos are traditionally worn long, tied with an obi (wide silk sash) and sometimes other sashes on more formal or dressy occasions. Haori are shorter jackets which are sometimes worn over the top of Kimono as an extra layer and tie easily at the front with short braided silk ties which are attached to the lapels - they slip neatly away if the Haori is worn open.
As all vintage and antique kimono were hand made you may see some loose, temporary stitches around edges of sleeves, hems and collars. These stitches, called shitsuke ito, are retained to assist the valuable kimono in holding its shape and alignment when not being worn. The stitches are normally removed before wearing then restitched again after cleaning and before storage. We like the air of authenticity they bring so feel free to keep them if you like, or carefully remove them before wearing.
Whether you wear a Kimono or Haori as traditionally intended or repurpose them as glamorous jackets or luxurious robes you'll look and feel pretty damn amazing - even if you are simply dressing up a pair of jeans! 'Pinkuchō' Haori

- The striking appeal of Japanese hand-dyed Shibori textiles speaks for itself. This 'Pinkuchō' Haori jacket is resplendent with hand-dyed butterflies gracing a deep pink embroidered fabric, featuring zigzag lightning patterns and Chrysanthemum motifs, creating an utterly unique garment.

Each tiny repeating pattern which makes up the overall design is the result of a dedicated shibori artist wrapping string around tiny bubbles of silk fabric - the colour doesn't take underneath the string when dipped. When the fabric has dried each string is undone by hand. The result is incredible. It takes many months just for this process alone to be completed. The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The immaculate white and gold silk inner lining features the running water Ryuusu design, reminiscent of a wandering stream. The ties are braided silk in white graduating to a matching deep pink colour.
This elegant piece would look as magical tied closed over a dress as it would worn as an open jacket - teamed with jeans and a t-shirt or trousers and a blouse. Pinkuchō also makes a striking talking piece when hung on the wall as textile art.
The overall condition of this vintage garment is excellent, despite some tiny, hardly noticeable spots on the inner lining.

The creamy silk inner lining features the smart kikkou 'tortoise shell' pattern, itself, representing long life. The hexagons are in turn punctuated with auspicious Japanese motifs including maple leaves, bamboo grass and Chrysanthemum blooms.

This glorious reddish-pink, textured-silk vintage Kimono has a fine plaid pattern with threads of pale silver, black and indigo running through it and is as fun and energetic as the festival (matsuri) it is named after. It is lined in gold and maroon silk.
Condition
While the outside of this kimono is immaculate - there is extensive age spotting covering the gold part of the lining - meaning that it is best worn tied with a sash or hung on the wall as textile art. It might be worth investigating removing or replacing the lining if you wish to wear it as an open jacket.

The vintage silk 'Many Waves' Kimono features a dusky-pink, repeating wave pattern, against a pearlescent cream background with intermittent larger waves in grape, orange and olive green. From a distance the overall colour appears pale pink.
The lining has panels of cream, pale lemon and lilac silk.
Externally this kimono is immaculate except for the tiniest hole towards the hem at the back of the garment. The inside lining has a little age spotting down the back where it is not visible when worn or hung as wall art.

'Nene no Sensu' Kimono

The shimmering satin finish on this musk pink 'Nene's fans' vintage kimono feels incredibly luxurious to the touch. The bottom half of the silk Kimono is decorated with Jacquard fan motifs of varying sizes and there are tiny jacquard springtime raindrops covering most of the material. The lining is plain white silk.
At the top under the collar is a Paulonia flower inside a circle which is the Kamon (family crest) of those with the surname of Toyotomi. The original clan leader was a famous samurai lord who played an important part in Japanese history and was both popular and highly controversial throughout his life - he is known as one of the three unifiers of Japan. His wife was Nene.
In immaculate condition generally however there are a couple of barely noticeable squareish marks on the outside of the lower part of the kimono's back.
This would make a stunning robe for the romantic, tied with a sash or hung in a a pretty bedroom.
