Superbly hand-crafted, silk Kimono and Haori form part of Japan's traditional wear for both women and men.
We've collected these stunning, pre-loved pieces during our travels through Japan, mainly in Kyoto - long famous for it's silk textile industry. However, we also have a trusted expert on the ground who keeps a discerning eye out for unique, well presented garments on our behalf.
All our Kimono and Haori are hand-sewn, vintage or antique and 100% silk. On rare occasion it is possible that a more recently updated 'lining' may be made of a different fabric for ease of care. We'll naturally let you know in the product description if that is the case.
The Japanese are a highly respectful nation so although some of our Kimono are very old, they have been so lovingly maintained they look and feel new. It is however important to note that due to age there can sometimes be imperfections and discolouration in places - predominantly on the inner lining which is not visible when worn. We endeavour to point out all such examples wherever possible.
Kimonos are traditionally worn long, tied with an obi (wide silk sash) and sometimes other sashes on more formal or dressy occasions. Haori are shorter jackets which are sometimes worn over the top of Kimono as an extra layer and tie easily at the front with short braided silk ties which are attached to the lapels - they slip neatly away if the Haori is worn open.
As all vintage and antique kimono were hand made you may see some loose, temporary stitches around edges of sleeves, hems and collars. These stitches, called shitsuke ito, are retained to assist the valuable kimono in holding its shape and alignment when not being worn. The stitches are normally removed before wearing then restitched again after cleaning and before storage. We like the air of authenticity they bring so feel free to keep them if you like, or carefully remove them before wearing.
Whether you wear a Kimono or Haori as traditionally intended or repurpose them as glamorous jackets or luxurious robes you'll look and feel pretty damn amazing - even if you are simply dressing up a pair of jeans! These garments are works of art in themselves which look just as striking hung on the wall.
We hope you'll find yourself the perfect item within our intimate collection.

Each tiny repeating pattern which makes up the overall design is the result of a dedicated shibori artist wrapping string around tiny bubbles of silk fabric - the colour doesn't take underneath the string when dipped. When the fabric has dried each string is undone by hand. The result is incredible. It takes many months just for this process alone to be completed. The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The immaculate white and gold silk inner lining features the running water Ryuusu design, reminiscent of a wandering stream. The ties are braided silk in white graduating to a matching deep pink colour.
This elegant piece would look as magical tied closed over a dress as it would worn as an open jacket - teamed with jeans and a t-shirt or trousers and a blouse. Pinkuchō also makes a striking talking piece when hung on the wall as textile art.
The overall condition of this vintage garment is excellent, despite some tiny, hardly noticeable spots on the inner lining.
Note - Please Read before purchase:
Kimono and Haori are generally made, for wearing on smaller framed, not too tall bodies - however if worn as an open jacket there is generally enough room in the sleeve area and in length to be worn by several sizes larger and taller than originally intended. However there is no guarantee it will sit perfectly on your body shape. Let's call it freestyle!
As we take every measure to ensure you are advised of the correct sizing prior to purchase - we ask you to please be aware that we don't refund for garments chosen in error. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any queries regarding dimensions before purchase.

The striking appeal of Japanese hand-dyed Shibori textiles speaks for itself. This 'Murasakino' purple Haori jacket is resplendent in floral patters and motifs, their exquisite design creating a unique garment.

The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The creamy silk inner lining features the smart kikkou 'tortoise shell' pattern, itself, representing long life. The hexagons are in turn punctuated with auspicious Japanese motifs including maple leaves, bamboo grass and Chrysanthemum blooms.

This vintage, black silk 'Movement of Clouds' Haori is covered in a captivating swirling jacquard cloud designs incorporating floral and diamond motifs. The Japanese believe the deities reside in the clouds which would lend a certain spiritual essence to this garment - it is at the very least rather ethereal looking!
The lining is cream silk with an attractive, somewhat geometrical floral pattern with a fine gold line through parts - likely stylised wisteria as the lilac coloured flower popularly symbolises the purple cloud which deities might descend to earth upon... So we're not exactly sure of the logistics on that one - but what we do know is that this haori is both stylish and elegant. And if it swathes you in supernatural powers of attraction there's no need to thank us.
The woven ties are made of cream silk and silver thread - note that they tuck away nicely when worn as an open jacket. There is a small family crest on the back beneath the collar - hand-stitched in silver silk thread.
Immaculate condition.

The occasional silver and gold metallic patterning on this black silk vintage haori evokes a sense of 'Fleeting' flowers, gently tumbling away on the breeze reminding us of the Buddhist concept of impermanence and the importance of appreciating the things that come and go. Not holding on. We like the message that accompanies this haori - whether it was intended or not... Ok, so we are dreamers.
The black background has fine ripples over its entirety and the lining is pale gold silk patterned with regal Chrysanthemums. The tassel tie at the front is in silver and pale pink. If not used to tie the coat shut they sit hidden behind the lapels.
Excellent condition.

This black, vintage silk Haori shows off large 'silver flower' motifs - we believe the subject is the frilled petal Iris which blooms in late spring in Japan when the days are warm and the skies are clear.
Bold spheres cover the cream silk lining. The short tie on the front lapels is a braid of cream and pale blue silk hinting at the sun and the sky. The small hand stitched family crest on the background is in gold thread. Gorgeous.
Perhaps wear as an open jacket over a t-shirt with jeans or a black top and flowing wide leg pants or instantly glam up a simple black dress by tying at the front or leaving open.
Great condition - slight age discolouration on lining .

We imagine the sun goddess Amaterasu would have looked perfect in this vintage silk Kimono. So very bright, happy and bold. Glowing deep vermilion this sacred colour deflects negative energy. Hints of gold , black and white suggest luxury, elegance and purity.

This beautifully hand-sewn Kimono has a textured cotton weave and raw silk feel.
Wear as a long jacket, robe or as traditionally intended - crossed over and tied with an Obi or traditional sash.
This striking Kimono also looks spectacular hung on the wall.
Unlined.
Immaculate condition.
Note - Please Read before purchase:
Kimonos are generally made, for wearing traditionally tied with an Obi sash, on smaller framed, not too tall bodies - however if worn as an open jacket there is generally enough room in the sleeve area and in length to be worn by several sizes larger and taller than originally intended.
All vintage and antique kimono and haori were hand made. Therefore you may see some loose, temporary stitches around edges of sleeves, hems and collars on our kimonos. These stitches, called shitsuke ito, are kept in place to assist the valuable kimono in retaining its shape and alignment. In Japan the stitches are normally removed before wearing then restitched again after cleaning and before storage, for the same reasons as above. We like the look of authenticity they bring so feel free to retain them if you like, or remove them before wearing.

Sandalwood, cedar, pine, bamboo grass and flowers... The 'Scents of the Forest' vintage Kimono in cinnamon, gold, burgundy and maroon silk is not only incredibly beautiful but also promotes a sense of calm. Wrap yourself in the luxurious 'Mori no Kaori' Kimono and picture yourself sitting on a sunny temple deck in the Kyoto mountains - inhaling sweet and spicy incense and the aromatic oils released from freshly walked over pine needles.
Note the patterns of a flowing river, regal chrysanthemums, daffodils, pine trees, cherry and plum blossoms, maple and more - motifs for all 4 seasons which also make this the perfect piece for displaying year round as wall art too.
The intentionally tiny speckling in the base fabric, in lighter and darker tones, creates the illusion of bronzing which adds to the sense of luxury.
If it's at all possible for a Kimono to emit a positive 'wear me' energy - this garment would be a text book case. We will truly be sad to part with it.
This Kimono is in immaculate condition inside and out.

The black sheep of our current vintage silk Kimono family. This electric 'purple' and hot pink blossom number, with a delectable sheen, is actually a form of michiyuki or jacket which traditionally sits over the top of Kimono and closes with press studs at the front. Similar to the way a haori is traditionally worn. In fact the length of this is about midway between a kimono and haori.
More often Michiyuki have a square-ish neckline but this is V shaped so this item is quite unusual. We just adore that the pattern is reversed in colour on the inside! The colour purple is considered noble and enlightening in Japan which should explain how very special you feel when you step out this jacket!. The lining is a satiny silk the colour of rockmelon (canteloupe) flesh.
We're a bit reluctant to let this one go as we only have one of them (which is why it's hanging out with it's kimono siblings instead of its own section!) but we hope to find more of this style on our next trip.
It certainly makes a statement! Nobody puts 'Murasaki' in the corner!
Excellent condition.

'The language of flowers' says it all... or does it. In this case there are a couple of secrets. Although this flowing black crepe-silk, vintage kimono has such large, intricate flowers screen-printed around the base that you can barely take your eyes off them there are hidden messages worth seeking out.
A feature area of gold silk embroidery, on the front left hand side panel (see image 2) adds life and movement to the art work colours, in muted tones of red, green, grey and gold, and the lining is in pale gold silk. But the most delightful part of this story is the lining of the inner lapels - a completely different, slightly more relaxed and exotic floral display for your eyes only - or those you choose to share it with. It is quite exquisite. See the last 2 images to note the change in style.
There are 3 Kamon or family crests across the back, on the top of each sleeve and just under the collar.
Condition
It is in very good condition generally but there are tiny age speckles visible in the lighter coloured parts of the external fabric (images 3 & 4) in the patterning as you can see in the detail images - although hardly noticeable unless you are up very close to the hem of the kimono. There's also a little age spotting and watermarking on the inner lining which is not visible when worn or displayed as art.
Given its age and ornate design, plus the raised gold and silver embroidery in one section this piece would look stunning displayed as a wall hanging.

We've named this vintage silk kimono 'white maple' as it is showered in white maple leaf motifs, and tiny flowers, over a pale grey/green background . The lining has panels of shimmery cream and vibrant teal silk.
This garment has quiet, perhaps even shy personality compared with many of its fellow Zenbu Home kimonos... maybe it's the onset of winter as the momiji gracefully fall that was the inspiration for the design.
Wrap yourself in this delicately pretty piece, or display on your bedroom wall to promote a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere in your surroundings. While the maple pattern evokes end autumn or early winter - the cool tones also make for refreshing eye candy on a summer's day.
Excellent condition both inside and out.

The muted colours of the 'Garden scenery' vintage silk Kimono suggests the wearer favoured it towards the end of autumn when things were less bright than the glowing oranges and red maple leaves from earlier in the seasonal colour palate.
The patterns include various flowers, bamboo leaves and dusty swirls, evoking an image of leaves starting to flutter and float - this Kimono celebrates the best of transitioning seasons. Anyone who loves their plants and flowers would be happy wearing this textile which implies a walk through a considered garden.
