This rich red, antique Japanese lacquerware lidded-bowl features painted, real-gold brilliant Ume ( plum blossom) motifs; second only to Sakura cherry blossoms as Japan's most iconic and famous flower.

The gold embossing positively radiates when catching the light, which stands as testimony to the quality of the craftsmanship, given its age.

The bowl's lid can be used as a shallow footed dish in itself.

To craft traditional hand-made lacquerware such as this - wood is first carved then very finely sanded then brushed with many layers of highest quality lacquer which is buffed and polished at each and every layer. They are lightweight and quite heatproof meaning you can cup them in bare hands to sip hot soup or tea from them.

Traditional lacquerware like all artisan goods, is made to last - and is the reason this piece is still so beautiful and functioning today. Of course all antiques show at least minor imperfections from age but it simply adds to their allure! The zen of imperfection.
