We named this 100% silk vintage Kimono 'Furutta', meaning different or eccentric, for its truly unusual design. We've never seen another one quite like this.
However the 60's introduced a new trend in Kimono style and colours and this is a great example.
Kimono makers have always had a knack for putting together seemingly disconnected colours and patterns and making them work. The colouring of this almost copper brown background with white, black, ochre and pale khaki looks as though there could have been an African influence - the lining colour is a duo of peach and lemon gelato.
Wear as a long jacket, robe or as intended - wrapped with an Obi or or other traditional sash.
Excellent condition - only very slight age marks on inner lining and watermark on inner sleeve.

This antique hanhaba (half width) style Obi from the Meiji period (1868–1912) features a famous trio seen in Japanese history and culture - Pinetrees, Plum blossom and Bamboo.
These good luck symbols often seen in Japanese art, tableware (ceramics and lacquerware) and traditional clothing around the New Year and affectionately referred to as the 3 'Friends of Winter'. The pine represents courage, the bamboo upstanding character and the plum blossom symbolises purity. What better concept for moving forward into a new year.
We've put some light into these images for you to see the detail however the obi itself is quite demure as was the fashion of time and the colour has become a little muted due to exposure to light and air at various stages throughout the last century or more - as you might expect in an antique piece. Unfortunately we don't know the actual age of this Obi but it was woven sometime in the Meiji era - ageing it somewhere between 100 - 149 years (in 2017).
The base colour is dark gold which catches in the light and the pattern features greens from pine needle to olive, pinkish tones and white.
Condition
Given its antique status this beautiful piece is in very good condition - there are a couple of small areas where the weaving has unravelled slightly (see image 3) - which we think adds character and a sense of history. We highly recommend this obi for display purposes only - in order to preserve its beauty.

This elegant, silk kimono reminds us of the Japanese winter sky (fuyuzora) on a silvery hued day as the snow is about to fall. Small birds are seen here scurrying about in the breeze drawn to glowing red lantern light. At least that's our interpretation and we're sticking to it.
Lined with a warming blood-red and snowy white silk - this vintage piece would make a splendid lightweight winter coat but would look equally as elegant displayed on the wall.

This striking, textured silk Haori from Kyoto features black and white shibori (tie dye) with red highlights and is lined with light pearlescent material and a faint purple daimond pattern.
Hamura means leafy foliage - to us the design suggests peeking through leaves at a festival of glowing lanterns or fireworks. It could of course represent the white and pink mochi balls found attached to branches as part of the new year celebration. Whatever way you frame it this haori says 'party!'. How will you be celebrating in your new haori?
Perhaps wear as an open jacket over a t-shirt with jeans or a black top and flowing wide leg pants or instantly glam up a simple black dress by tying at the front or leaving open.

This antique, silk 'Golden Peony' Hanhaba style Obi (1/2 width kimono sash) from the Meiji period (1868–1912) features peonies, chrysanthemum and leaves, pine needles, plum blossoms and clouds - symbolically they cover the late autumn to early winter seasons.

This winter weight, raw silk Kimono from Kyoto is a deeply dark, almost black, Indigo blue. Close up the natural weave reveals a very fine mid blue thread running through the dark background which catches the light beautifully.
'Koai' translates as deep indigo - just one end of the spectrum of Japanese indigo blues. Midnight never looked so good.
Wear as a long jacket, robe or as traditionally intended - crossed over and tied with an Obi or traditional sash.
Although this Kimono was made for a man, as determined by the shorter length of sleeve, it works as an elegant overcoat style jacket for a female. Dress it up with a soft silk scarf or a brightly coloured brooch.

The 'Scents of the Forest' vintage Kimono in cinnamon, gold, burgundy and maroon silk is not only incredibly beautiful but also promotes a sense of calm. The striking appeal of Japanese hand-dyed Shibori textiles speaks for itself. This 'Murasakino' purple Haori jacket is resplendent in floral patters and motifs, their exquisite design creating a unique garment.
Each tiny repeating pattern which makes up the overall design is the result of a dedicated shibori artist wrapping string around tiny bubbles of silk fabric - the colour doesn't take underneath the string when dipped. When the fabric has dried each string is undone by hand. The result is incredible. It takes many months just for this process alone to be completed. The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The creamy silk inner lining features the smart kikkou 'tortoise shell' pattern, itself, representing long life. The hexagons are in turn punctuated with auspicious Japanese motifs including maple leaves, bamboo grass and Chrysanthemum blooms.
Tailored to wear open - it would look equally stunning over a dress as it would teamed with jeans and a t-shirt or smart trousers and a blouse. Murasakino also makes a striking talking piece when hung on the wall as textile art.
The overall condition of this vintage garment is excellent, despite some very minor age spotting on the reverse side of the sleeves.

The shimmering satin finish on this musk pink 'Nene's fans' vintage kimono feels incredibly luxurious to the touch. The bottom half of the silk Kimono is decorated with Jacquard fan motifs of varying sizes and there are tiny jacquard springtime raindrops covering most of the material. The lining is plain white silk.
At the top under the collar is a Paulonia flower inside a circle which is the Kamon (family crest) of those with the surname of Toyotomi. The original clan leader was a famous samurai lord who played an important part in Japanese history and was both popular and highly controversial throughout his life - he is known as one of the three unifiers of Japan. His wife was Nene.
In immaculate condition generally however there are a couple of barely noticeable squareish marks on the outside of the lower part of the kimono's back.
This would make a stunning robe for the romantic, tied with a sash or hung in a a pretty bedroom.

Each tiny repeating pattern which makes up the overall design is the result of a dedicated shibori artist wrapping string around tiny bubbles of silk fabric - the colour doesn't take underneath the string when dipped. When the fabric has dried each string is undone by hand. The result is incredible. It takes many months just for this process alone to be completed. The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The immaculate white and gold silk inner lining features the running water Ryuusu design, reminiscent of a wandering stream. The ties are braided silk in white graduating to a matching deep pink colour.
This elegant piece would look as magical tied closed over a dress as it would worn as an open jacket - teamed with jeans and a t-shirt or trousers and a blouse. Pinkuchō also makes a striking talking piece when hung on the wall as textile art.
The overall condition of this vintage garment is excellent, despite some tiny, hardly noticeable spots on the inner lining.

Kimono and Haori are generally made, for wearing on smaller framed, not too tall bodies - however if worn as an open jacket there is generally enough room in the sleeve area and in length to be worn by several sizes larger and taller than originally intended. All vintage and antique kimono and haori were hand made. Therefore you may see some loose, temporary stitches around edges of sleeves, hems and collars on our kimonos. These stitches, called shitsuke ito, are kept in place to assist the valuable kimono in retaining its shape and alignment. In Japan the stitches are normally removed before wearing then restitched again after cleaning and before storage, for the same reasons as above. We like the look of authenticity they bring so feel free to retain them if you like, or remove them before wearing.
