'Hanakotoba' Kimono

'The language of flowers' says it all... or does it. In this case there are a couple of secrets. Although this flowing black crepe-silk, vintage kimono has such large, intricate flowers screen-printed around the base that you can barely take your eyes off them there are hidden messages worth seeking out.
A feature area of gold silk embroidery, on the front left hand side panel (see image 2) adds life and movement to the art work colours, in muted tones of red, green, grey and gold, and the lining is in pale gold silk. But the most delightful part of this story is the lining of the inner lapels - a completely different, slightly more relaxed and exotic floral display for your eyes only - or those you choose to share it with. It is quite exquisite. See the last 2 images to note the change in style.
There are 3 Kamon or family crests across the back, on the top of each sleeve and just under the collar.
Condition
It is in very good condition generally but there are tiny age speckles visible in the lighter coloured parts of the external fabric (images 3 & 4) in the patterning as you can see in the detail images - although hardly noticeable unless you are up very close to the hem of the kimono. There's also a little age spotting and watermarking on the inner lining which is not visible when worn or displayed as art.
Given its age and ornate design, plus the raised gold and silver embroidery in one section this piece would look stunning displayed as a wall hanging.

Kimonos are generally made, for wearing traditionally tied with an Obi sash, on smaller framed, not too tall bodies - however if worn as an open jacket there is generally enough room in the sleeve area and in length to be worn by several sizes larger and taller than originally intended. However there is no guarantee it will sit perfectly on your body shape. Let's call it freestyle!

We like the look of authenticity they bring so feel free to retain them if you like, or remove them before wearing.

- The striking appeal of Japanese hand-dyed Shibori textiles speaks for itself. This 'Pinkuchō' Haori jacket is resplendent with hand-dyed butterflies gracing a deep pink embroidered fabric, featuring zigzag lightning patterns and Chrysanthemum motifs, creating an utterly unique garment.

Each tiny repeating pattern which makes up the overall design is the result of a dedicated shibori artist wrapping string around tiny bubbles of silk fabric - the colour doesn't take underneath the string when dipped. When the fabric has dried each string is undone by hand. The result is incredible. It takes many months just for this process alone to be completed. The fabric is then hand-sewn into Kimono form and lined in silk.
The immaculate white and gold silk inner lining features the running water Ryuusu design, reminiscent of a wandering stream. The ties are braided silk in white graduating to a matching deep pink colour.
This elegant piece would look as magical tied closed over a dress as it would worn as an open jacket - teamed with jeans and a t-shirt or trousers and a blouse. Pinkuchō also makes a striking talking piece when hung on the wall as textile art.
The overall condition of this vintage garment is excellent, despite some tiny, hardly noticeable spots on the inner lining.
