This beautiful artisan ceramic tea cup features a delicately brush-painted 'Matsu' or Japanese pine tree motif and crosshatching around the rim in black upon a grey background glaze.
Crafted by Jun Matsuo of Ryozan kiln in Saga prefecture. Jun is a highly-regarded "up-and-comer" (code for always an apprentice, even in your 50's, until your master becomes immortal.... ) in the 'Takeo Kokaratsu ware' style. His master is renowned Kyoto ceramicist, Shigeya Iwabuchi.
Much of Jun's work fetches many, many thousands of yen as it is exhibited and much appreciated around the world. We were fortunate enough to purchase this example of his work from a gallery in Kyoto.
It feels wonderful to hold. We can only imagine what it feels like to sip tea from it.
Like many of the beautiful artisan wares we have at Zenbu Home - we would dearly love to keep this wonderful cup which vibrates with the artist's energy. But if we kept everything we were so drawn to we'd be living in our car with all our beautiful things in storage... we are practicing letting go. We hope this gorgeous piece goes to a good home. Artisan ceramics are 'not just for Christmas - they're for life'....
