'Bikkuri' Sake Cup

Many sake cups resemble small bowls without stems. This particular sake vessel is reminiscent of the 'bajouhai' style or stemmed 'horse cup'; originally designed to allow sake to be drunk steadily, whilst on horseback. Who knew? A charming way to become steadily drunk...

The handmade cup features ribbed sides and celadon crackle glaze with a slightly deeper blue area over one edge where the glaze is thicker.  The bowl sits on a bare reddish clay stem and after the last sip the drinker is rewarded with 'surprise' in refreshing green  - perhaps a reminder that they need another drink!
